In the neighborhood of Marechal Hermes, on February 25, 1980, the Escola Técnica Estadual Oscar Tenório (ETEOT) was founded. The school, which was previously linked to the State Secretariat of Education (SEEDUC), is currently maintained by the Foundation for Support of Technical Schools (FAETEC) - an agency linked to the State Secretariat of Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro. The choice of the school's name was a way of paying tribute to appellate judge Oscar Accioly Tenório.1

A person is seated in a leather chair, hands crossed over an open book on a wooden table. Behind them, there is a wall decorated with ornamental panels. On the table, besides the book, there is an empty ashtray and a metal object.

In 2002, the FAETEC in Marechal Hermes made news in some newspapers - such as Jornal do Brasil - after donating about 270 kilos of food to the "Christmas without hunger" campaign. In 2005, the campus was back in the news, but for other reasons: in June, ETEOT and ETEVM made headlines in Jornal do Brasil, which reported: "Technical School Abandoned." This was because students and teachers went public with complaints against the units' infrastructure. In the same year, the FAETEC in Marechal Hermes was mentioned in the newspapers Tribuna da Imprensa and Jornal do Comércio, on the list of bands that would perform at the Festival de Bandas Nacionais, at Sala Cecília Meireles.2

Black-and-white newspaper article about an abandoned technical school.Image description: The image is a black-and-white newspaper page. At the top, the headline "Escola técnica abandonada" ("Technical school abandoned") stands out prominently. Below it, there is a mention of students and teachers in the program run by the Faculdade de Tecnologia, referring to a lack of materials and equipment on display. On the left, there is an advertisement for "Shopping de Ofertas JB" featuring a photo of a person holding a shopping bag. Next to it, there is an image of a person standing in front of a washing machine. The layout is linear, with the advertisement on the left and the image of the person on the right.

To compose this work, we conducted some interviews with students, teachers, and inspectors. The questions were as follows:

1. How long have you studied/worked at FAETEC in Marechal Hermes?

2. How much has changed over this time?

3. What is the most striking moment (funny, touching, sad, etc.) that you experienced at FAETEC in Marechal Hermes?

4. What would you like to see change here at FAETEC in Marechal Hermes?

5. What do you like to do most at the FAETEC in Marechal Hermes?

We interviewed students Ana Clara da Silva Macêdo (3 years at the school), Hevelym Jamily Sabino Rodrigues (6 years at FAETEC school), Rafael Aleixo de Melo (3 years at FAETEC) and Bruno Lemos Sant’ana (3 years at FAETEC).

The students reported that the school's structure and the people who worked there changed over time. Some standout moments were the technical fairs, the parties, and one day in particular, when it rained heavily and, after class time, Ana Clara couldn't leave Marechal because the train tunnel was flooded and there was no way through. They told us that they like being with their friends at school.

Our second interviewee was Cláudia Maria Campinha dos Santos, a biochemistry and microbiology teacher. She joined FAETEC in the first public exam, in 1998. The teacher reported that there have been many changes in the school's structure since she arrived. Her coworkers have also changed over time. Many are no longer at the school due to retirements and deaths.

Her academic life underwent a major evolution of studies and training, since at the beginning of her career she had a completed undergraduate degree, and today she holds a postdoctoral degree. Cláudia also recounted that there were several memorable moments, such as the tribute from the third year of clinical analysis, and the graduation ceremonies -- which are always memorable.

What she would like to see changed at the campus is the care for the outdoor area and the opening of the school's side gate, so that there's no need to walk across the entire space to reach Oscar Tenório, as well as more security.

The teacher also reported that the leadership is great: they care about keeping the school looking nice and well kept. What she likes most to do is carry out her work and her research, and she also enjoys the interaction with students and teachers.

Our third interview was with Ana Liz - who has been at the school for 16 years and works in the copy room and general services -, with Jurema - an employee for 24 years - and Alzenir - who has worked at ETEOT for 6 years. Jurema and Alzenir are school inspectors.

The interviewees reported that a lot has changed, and for the better, such as the school's internal and external structure, the students' behavior regarding the care of school property, and the construction of the ramp for wheelchair-using students.

For them, some memorable moments were the celebrations, parties, technical fairs, the technical visits - which are very well organized by the professor and coordinator of the clinical analysis course, Regina Reis - and the interactions they have with the students.

They pointed to a specific technical fair, in which the computer science students made a cane to help people with low vision, after observing an employee with that special need. They also recalled the administration students who provide services to FAETEC itself during their internship period, and some sad moments, such as the loss of professor Cleide.

Regarding the changes, they pointed to developments such as the inspectors' routine, the air conditioning adaptation that we now have, the kitchen - which was a benefit for those coming from the internship program -, the management laboratory, the 4 laboratories... everything that helps the students.
