Founded in 1948 on the initiative of a group of businessmen led by Raymundo Ottoni de Castro Maya, MAM Rio is one of the most important cultural institutions in Brazil. The museum is not merely an exhibition space, but a landmark of modern world architecture and a center of artistic experimentation that shaped Brazilian culture in the second half of the 20th century.

Located in the Aterro do Flamengo, a vast urban park built in the 1960s on successive landfills in Guanabara Bay, using earth from the leveling of Morro do Santo Antônio. The design of the Aterro, led by urban planner Lota de Macedo Soares, was conceived as a democratic space for leisure and culture.

The MAM's current headquarters, opened in 1958, is a masterpiece by Affonso Eduardo Reidy. The horizontal structure, suspended by concrete arches, allows an open, integrated view of the gardens designed by landscaping master Roberto Burle Marx and of the bay's waters, creating a constant dialogue between the built environment and Rio's natural landscape. Before having its permanent headquarters, the MAM operated in rooms lent by Banco Boavista and in the Gustavo Capanema Building.

Over the decades, the museum has hosted movements that revolutionized national art, such as the Grupo Frente (1955) and the Nova Objetividade Brasileira (1967), where Hélio Oiticica presented his celebrated installation "Tropicália."
In 1978, the institution faced its most tragic moment: a large-scale fire destroyed 90% of its collection, including works by Picasso, Miró, Salvador Dalí, and Di Cavalcanti. However, thanks to the mobilization of society and the artistic community, the museum rose again. Today, it holds more than 15,000 works, including the prestigious collections of Gilberto Chateaubriand and Joaquim Paiva, with works by Adriana Varejão, Beatriz Milhazes, and Lygia Clark.
The MAM Cinemateca, with its vast catalog of 7,000 titles, completes this landmark cultural complex.
