The Carioca Suburbs. Loaded with stories, culture, and identities, it is the theme of the first season of the Rio Memórias web series, Memórias Cariocas.
In this final episode of the first season, author Kátia Santos presents the story of Dona Ivone Lara, who, starting out from Madureira, conquered the world with her compositions, successful partnerships, and memorable performances throughout Brazil, in the United States, and in different countries across South America, Africa, and Europe. To discuss the cultural richness of the suburbs, we interviewed anthropologist Sandra Carneiro, historian Rafael Mattoso, and Claudio Jorge Soares, vice president of the Instituto Cultural 100% Suburbano. We also did a heritage blitz at Cine Vaz Lobo, which was once the city's second-largest cinema, with 1,800 seats, closed since 1986 and in an advanced state of deterioration.
The video features subtitles in Portuguese, which can be turned off.
