Rio Memórias

The Suburbs of Rio. Loaded with stories, culture and identities, this is the theme of the first season of the Memórias Cariocas Web Series, from Rio Memórias.

In this episode, we focus on the railway, a symbol of modernity that shapes the new suburbs and transforms parishes into neighborhoods. We tell the story of Guilherme Paraense, who won Brazil's first gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp. He lived in Méier and was the great-great-grandfather of Vitor Almeida, author of the "Suburbano da Depressão" profile on Instagram. We also show the neglect of the Museu do Trem, a historic landmark at risk.

The video includes subtitles in Portuguese, which can be turned off.

The Memórias Cariocas Web Series is a Rio Memórias production. We are sponsored by Norsul, Kasznar Leonardos, Impulso and the Ministry of Culture through the Cultural Incentive Law, by Light S.A. and by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the State Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy through the State Cultural Incentive Law, and by the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, Banco BTG Pactual and Elogroup through the Municipal Cultural Incentive Law – ISS Law.
